Project Management for a Government Agency
Challenge
A government agency had a system held together by C++, COM+, and Visual Basic that was in desperate need of an upgrade. The outdated system, used by the majority of citizens, was customer-facing and tied to the cashier mainframe, creating a delicate situation. How could a state-wide system be overhauled without slowing down operations? How could the new system be maintained and serviced in the future to avoid the same problems?
Solution
i4DM launched a three-tiered approach:
- Mentored developers to insure effective deployment and establish an in-house knowledge base
- Provided support and maintenance to the current DLS system
- Migrated code from the old system to a C#.net arrangement with SQL Server
Results
- Established a cooperative culture with the in-house developers, resulting in zero downtime during the system integration
- Enthusiastic renewal of the project contract, largely in part to an extremely successful re-architecting of the object model
- Created a highly-skilled internal maintenance team to care for the new system
