Human-Computer Interaction for a Corporate Powerhouse
Challenge
A large amount of company training was conducted through a manual process. All details and records (from sign-up to class scheduling to test scores) were complied and delegated to a third-party company to process, resulting in a lengthy and inflexible paper-based system. The training facilitators didn't have any easy method of handling wait lists, no shows, unregistered trainees, etc. How could a new system be integrated that would increase speed and functionality? Would there be enough flexibility to handle various scheduling issues?
Solution
- A custom application for instructors automatically downloads data from the third-party tool for each class, including registered attendees and waitlisters
- A magnetic card reader swipes registrants as they arrive and match them up with the registered attendees, etc
- Data uploads to a central web application (which reconciles the data into one dataset), producing a flat file sent to the third-party tool for certification tracking
Results
- Ease of registration and scheduling greatly improved, as the application's flexibility allows issues such as no shows, swaps, and waitlisted attendees to be easily reconciled
- Accuracy of the system is greatly improved due to the magnetic card reader
- Consistency of the certification data has grown because of seamless third-party integration
